recently my mpg has been considerably lower than what it normally is...it used to be around 33 or so, slightly lower if i drove it hard. for the last week or two its dropped as low as 20 when being driven hard, the highest is around 27 when driving sensibly. i havnt changed anything on the car, i havnt changed the way i drive it (gear changes etc). the mods i have are a miltek decat and cat back and a pipercross air cone. any ideas what could be causing it? i know the weather is colder, but surely that wouldnt cause lower mpg especially once the engine has warmed up. a friend of mine suggested checking the spark plugs and cleaning the air cone to see if that helped, but i could do with some suggestions as to what could be causing this. i have really noticed a difference in fuel consumption, not only by the dash computer but also the fuel gauge, it just seems to be drinking it. also, i doubt its related, but recently both reversing lights have gone, and its not the bulbs or the fuse...thought this might be worth mentioning.

any help is much appreciated!

if you have got a decat how did you turn off the mil light sounds like it could be the downstream hego sensor

when was your cone cleaned last, dirty blocked cone=less air more fuel, might not be your problem but should be maintained regulary.

Every time you re-fuel your car, re-set the AVERAGE fuel consumption on the computer. This is the only way to have a rough idea what the car's consuming. It changes from journey to journey as your driving style does.
Recently, I re-set the average on the Motorway after re-fueling and after about 120 miles of ALL Motorway driving (70mph) I was averaging 42 mpg. That wasn't BS either. The needle on the gauge hardly moved and at one point I thought I was driving a TDi ! lol.gif Soon as the revs get high, it drinks petrol, like all other N/A petrol cars rolleyes.gif

your reverse lights could be a switch you could allways try bridging the switch out and see if the reverse lights work then

yeah i always reset the average mpg every time i refuel. i always get decent mpg after motorway driving, drops considerable around town as would be expected, just recently it seems ridiculously low even for town driving considering its never been that low before (i.e. 20mpg!).

have no idea what bridging the switch would involve, although someone did mention the fact that it might be the reversing switch. is it an easy thing to do?

thanks for all the help guys

I only get mid twentys in terms of MPG however i do drive slowly. Although i always make very short journeys back and forth to work.
On a run going 65 mph on duals i got 38 mpg. around 100 mile trip.
