No.
"Many a mod" as in modified heavily.
These little engines are capable of quite good things. So long as you have mechanical sympathy and service it regularly, it'll treat you just fine.

@Dan DC @ledzz80 I have before now linked an in depth Mk7 engine strip down where they took every single component on the engine apart to work out their strengths and weaknesses, if you are concerned you'll have to search for it but needless to say the engine was considered well over engineered for the power it was rated to and some of the components where considered the best quality seen on any standard car. the 1.6 lump is a good good engine..... if treated with respect.

Not specific to the ST, I have one and its come in handy a few times especially for torque settings etc.
