After a discussion in the office this morning, i've been wondering what is the definition of a supercar.

Here are a few of my criteria:
  • 0-60 in around 3.5 seconds.
  • 200mph+
  • Exclusivity
  • etc
The most important thing for me is that it looks like a supercar. It has to have a little crazy streak running through it, something kids would want a poster of.

My favourite supercar has been the Zonda for a while now, lets see what else you guys can come up with

Wikipedia says:

Supercar is a term generally used for high-end sports cars, whose performance is superior to that of its contemporaries. It has been defined specifically as "a very expensive, fast or powerful car with a centrally located engine",[1] and stated in more general terms: "it must be very fast, with sporting handling to match", "it should be sleek and eye-catching" and its price should be "one in a rarefied atmosphere of its own",[2] but the correct usage of the term is both subjective and disputed, especially amongst enthusiasts. The use of the term can be dependent on the era; a vehicle that may have been considered a supercar in one decade may not be considered the same in another.[citation needed] The term supercar may refer to factory-built, street-legal sports cars.[3] Some vehicles referred to as supercars include features required for race cars such as roll cages.[4]

I would have to agree with Zonda F, I have always liked Lambo's but they seem much easier to live with that you could drive them around cities etc... with no issues, I always thought supercars should be excentric, expensive and as you say you would want a poster on the wall.

I remember having a poster of the Countach (black) with some blonde drapped over it as a poster when I was a kid.

You have your Supercars --- Lamborghini,'s Porsche's, Aston Martin's, Ferrari's and Nissan's GTR , Honda's NSX

I believe Supercars are seen as car's anyone can afford, if you put the effort in, I know these cars are expensive 2nd hand got there no outer reach. Were as Hyper cars, you got to have the money rolling in to afford these....

Hyper Cars being --- Zonda's, Ferrari Enzo, Maserati MC12, Koenigsegg, Bugatti

Both types of car have the criteria:
  • 0-60 in around 3.5 seconds.
  • 200mph+ <-------------------(think this is more towards the Hypercars) Supercars 190mph max.
  • Exclusivity

honestly mate, there is no way you could drive a lambo through a city, people say there much easier to live with but there really not. drove an LP640 and LP560 both exausting to control and harder to see out of than they are to get into

The definition of a supercar can be summed up without words, just a few pictures.....

If you must have it translated into words, they should be loud (in both senses), expensive, and hideously impractical (Murcielago has creature comforts but it's width makes up for it in the impractablility stakes). Also, it can't be too good at it's job which is why in my view Lamborghinis make for better supercars than Ferraris (which are ultimately the better and more focused driving machines).

To me as most of you lot say the likes of porsches, astons, ford gt's etc ec are supercars.

I dont beleive you can 'make a supercar' by modifying it. At the end of the day it doesnt give you the exclusivety supercars have
