Thought this was an interesting video taking apart an EcoBoost with failed head gasket due to the coolant passage design.

I'm not sure if this is the cause of the infamous Focus RS engine failures as well.

what did ford do to the 1.6 in 2015 that fixed the issue. my 17 still needs a small coolant top up every 3 months or so.

I dont think Ford did anything to the internals of the engine, just the pipework/ coolant side.

If your loosing water first thing to do would be to change the coolant bottle cap as they are known for leaking vapour under pressure.

my cap never seems to fit super snug, its always very easy to twist off.
might need to pick one up.

Best to treat the cap as a consumable item, they're not mad money to replace each year anyway.
Depending on what condition the expansion tank is in, it might be worth swapping that for a new one as well. The older shape can get a bit crumbly around the pipe connections, if you have that one. Not sure if the newer shape does.
