Don't use the comparison sites, honestly mate, they are ridiculous. Call the specialist places direct and have a good chin wag about your past experiences, your situation, etc. Much better talking to a human being.

I tried to get a quote for a TVR. Best online price was over £2k ranging up to £5k! I called up a specialist company, who deal with the likes of Ferrari's and after a very long chat, they came back with a quote for £750.

So it just goes to show, talking is much better. But remember that you can do things to help.

1. Increase your excess

2. Go for a limited mileage scheme

3. Add other drivers

4. Talk about past cars or do an Advanced Driving course

5. Mention you are joining an Owners Club

6. Talk about security for the car. When I was talking about the TVR, I mentioned it would be on a driveway (not in a garage). BUT, I also mentioned the fact we've got massive 6ft wooden gates and a pole in the ground and that the car would be covered. That instantly made a difference.

Try Greenlight, Adrian Flux, Chris Knott, etc.

Anyway, I hope that helps.

The same kinda thing happend to me when i insured mine, i used gocompare & compare the market and there was a difference of about £300 with admiral (who came up cheapest for me) i asked them why there was such a difference between the 2 but they seemed to over complicate the answer so i didnt really have an idea of what they were on about - it was either that or i was just being thick
