True, everyone is entitled to an opinion. I prefer to listen to ones based on experience though, not speculation.

My friend had a Swift Sport for several years at the same time I had my Mk6 ST. It had a definite cam change due to the VVTI engine, which did give it a "fizz" but it was slow...higher up than a Fiesta... didn't sound as good either.

I think the main reason you are being questioned on this matter is that you are considering an MX5, which is in all essence, a RWD Mk6 ST with 2 seats.

A mx5 is completely different to a hot hatch, its a sports car, low to the ground, roof to take off, its nothing likr a rwd fiesta st come on! Yes it may not be any quicker but its purely been designed for driving rather than driving and practicality, you cant put them in the same league.

Yeh it was the cam change which made the engine sound pretty good and was quite loud standard too i loved it.

May be too unreliable for what you need from your car, but taking some of your ideas and running with it.......have you considered something like a TVR Chimaera?

They start around ÂŁ10k, very raw (some say slightly terrifying), incredible V8 noise, convertible for the summer, much faster than an ST or an MX5. Ticks a lot of your boxes.

That was in terms of you saying a Mk6 wasn't on your radar due to being too slow and underpowered.

The MX5 (later models) use the same engine, i.e. 2.0 Duratec.
I know yeh but the mx5 your inches off the ground so it would 'feel' quicker, and speed wouldent be as much of an issue considering you could have the roof off the mx5

An mx5 doesn't feel fast unless it's boosted. I have used it on track and on road.

But you can have fun and not be fast. In fact, sometimes a slower car let's you push the limits with greater ease.

See as much as i think im craving car that sounds good and revs out really smoothly i honestly think i would miss the low down shove, my old swift although fun on the right road, was awful on the motorway, no low down shove at all.

Sounds a bit like me when I moved from a Twincharger Fabia vRS to a Toyota GT86.

The drive was great, but you noticed the lack of torque and for me I could not get used to it. Was a great car but if i was to keep it, it would have been turbocharged.

Unless you go for a bigger displacement N/A or a V configuration engine, you will not have that low down grunt a turbo provides...

Flip side, unless you get an Impreza, a turbo engine will never sound as good (exhaust wise) as an N/A.

Supercharger is another option for sone boost, but they a revvy power delivery and usually have more at the top end compared to low down shove.

Either way, you need to make a compromise somewhere from your requirements scattered over numerous threads.

My brother has a BMW Z4 with the 3L I6 engine.

It has plenty of oomph, soft top for summer and cheap (like ÂŁ4k for a normal condition example).

Maybe what you're after?

If it was my choice I would dismiss the MK6 ST very quickly.

MK7 ST ticks all the modern hot hatch boxes and is just awesome fun.

MX5's are also a blast to drive, especially in the sun with the roof down... They really are a different driving experience entirely.

Conclusion: Toss a coin, heads it's Fiesta, tails it's MX5

Well I have a mk7 ST and have owned 3 mk3 MR2s. Two of them with aftermarket turbos. Okay so not an mx5 but similar power weight and rwd. As has been said you can't really compare. Ones a sports car one is a hot hatch. They do different things. The fez is fast fun easy to drive and practical. In comparison the MR2s were none of those (well the turbos were fast) But on a warm day with a clear B road I'd pick the Mr2 every time. Plus the MR2 really taught me how to drive. With them being mid engined with no stability control you really learn about balance, grip and tyres. If you don't they spit you off the road backwards.

For an everyday car the fiesta is 75% of the fun with 200% of the practicality though vs the mr2.

Well its fair to say after using my car today and having a think, i really dont think i could sacrifice the grunt to go to a roadster, the torque can be pretty exciting and i really would miss it having to rag the mx5 out while getting less mpg.

I think id much prefer a lotus elise to my car but thats just a bit of a pipe dream tbh haha, just doesent sound like mx5 will give me much more fun that this car, maybe on a summers day on a quiet b road but i cant remember the last time it was sunny aswell as a local b road actually being quiet so..... i bet they are awesome as a 2nd car but i cant afford 2 cars.

Haha yeah. One minute he's selling up due to the number of thefts, the next he's gonna go stage 2 or maybe 3 with the Fiesta, not happy with the noise from the exhaust, gonna get a sports cat, not happy with the performance yada yada yada I'm sure I've missed a few things lol

Now considering a mx5

What will it be next week?!

Ops got nothing on me. I’ve had 3x focus STs, 3xMR2s, 2xcivic type Rs. How’s that for keep changing your mind! In my defence after going from focus ST no 2 to mr2 no 1, I’d have kept it longer but I thought I was a driving god and learnt the hard way that the ST let you get away with murder and an MR2 with a aftermarket turbo really didn’t. Wifey made me sell it after I almost killed myself in it. Took me over a year to convince her to let me get another one. Then I boosted that one too.
