Interesting, I was more under the impression the mk8 was closer to 100kg heavier, as in Henry Catchpole's review.

 

Expanding on the above, after some googling:

mk7 (claimed) kerb weight: 1088kg

mk8 (claimed) kerb weight: 1262kg

Would be very interesting to see what the real life figures are, as that's quite a difference for a small hatchback.

I would if my 18"s weren't in storage. I have the all silver 17"s and performance pack 18"s.

Interesting to see theyre still quoting 200ps in the tech specs but theyre plated 205ps on the door pillar. I know its been discussed before but did we ever get to the bottom of why?

Mk7 is lighter than that buddy, and has more than 182hp :nice:

That Fords own figures, 99KG heavier, simple as that. Catchpole was spot on. So like having a fat ******* mate in the passenger seat who ate all the pies being dragged around with you every day.

You ain't going to notice a 100KG unless its strapped to your back. It's virtually impossible to compare with the seat of the pants feel, too many factors come into play, gearing, the way the engine produces power and torque, noise, where and the weight is distributed, etc etc. that's even before you factor in a multitude of factors like temp, road surface, tyres, and for ever on.

Even stop watch times are very difficult to make comparisons due to variables, unless of course they are so far apart to be obvious, but the basic performance of these 2 models is so close it will not be noticeable.

Anyway the way the tailgate performs, I reckon Ford have stuck half the extra weight in that :biggrin:

Follow my post in the tech section, the new struts are due for delivery today, hopefully will solve that issue.

That's not an elephant in the room, we all know that. It has more torque over a larger rev range...hence it being a few fractions of a second quicker.

 

Even as a Mk8 owner, that comparison is BS, unless one car absolutely runs away and destroys the other over multiple runs.

Too many variables, the biggest being the drivers and their reactions times,

Look at tyres, gearing, engine characteristics, clutch types and then power, torque and weight and you will see that these cars performance will be nearly identical.

At the end of the day, we are talking about 200HP souped up shopping trolleys, how about 190HP, 180kg, sub 10 1/4s and 0-100-0 in under 10secs, 12k new price, that's performance worth talking about and that's just my daily commuter.

The ST is a great car for daily driving on modern day roads, a perfect package IMO, but performance car it's not.

Someone posts a video about how quick the MK8 is and discusses tuning potenital with no reference to weight. You join in and further that split of the conversation. Me and Kenthammer discussing weight of the boot vs gas struts. Off topic.

The moderation on here is so frustratingly inconsistent.

 

How is the video irrelevant when the weight is being discussed, hence the mention of the 5 door variant (weight of doors) given the 2 marques have very similar power outputs...

 

Not a performance car but has "Ford Performance" badges stamped all over, oh yeah that is just marketing, yeah but it has a performance diff as an option and more than likely a performance clutch and performance tyres, guess I will have go to trading standards then :facepalm: :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:

What he was getting at was that all forms of Fiesta ST and such like, are just beefed up daily, run of the mill hatchbacks. They are not specifically designed sports cars, like an Exige or a Cayman.

Sure, they're vast improvements over their Billy basic variants, and are a hell of a lot of fun to drive and do have some 'performance' parts in their DNA...but they are just mongrels at the end of the day.

That's why we all love them so much though, cheap thrills!

It IS a performance version of the standard Fiesta.

You driving a bicycle as a daily commuter is totally irrelevant to the discussion.

 

I was just wanted to cover all the bases when mentioning the 5 door variant before you jump all over the video, if was irrelevant Car Wow wouldn't have wasted the time recording the video would they?They clearly thought people would want to see the difference when buying a new car. I get you like your MK7 ST I liked mine even when went up to a RS I still missed MK7 and wished I could have had both, but the MK8 is clearly better car in every area that is progression, stop been so green eyed we all on here because we all like our ford hot-hatches I would still daily an XR2 and that isn't anywhere the performance of a modern hot hatch doesn't mean it any less of an icon both the MK7 and MK8 ST will go down as modern classics, we are living it a golden era at the moment before everything becomes all electric :thumbsup: :st:

It wasn't me who said the video was irrelevant bud.

I'm not green eyed or envious in any way about the Mk8 and have said numerous times it is a good car and progression from the Mk7. For me personally though, it is not a big enough leap like the Mk6 to 7 was for me to justify getting one. That doesn't mean I don't think it isn't good

We all know it has more power and torque than the Mk7, is slightly quicker to accelerate and has better bits and bobs like the optional LSD.

My original comment in this thread was to say the weight claimed for the Mk7 was incorrect as well as its power output. That was all, didn't dispute the fact the Mk8 was quicker.
