Would this not more be dependant on the modification standard of the car?? If modified surely altering the final drive could be a solution to excessive wheel spin in the lower gears, increased fuel economy in all gears and less drone on motorways...

Messing with the final drive is the way Ford have gone every time they want to make something seem faster than those before, if modified though reversing Fords ideas could improve things??
And an all round slower accelerating car.

@_jimmy_ @Marv_st @jase_llan this may be the case as it is one of the Fiesta ST's that I have not owned or driven I am just more asking the question, and as so many Mk6 are running well over 200 bhp (albeit with less torque than say a Mk7) including those on here that are turbo'd or supercharged there is surely a possibility that the gearing on some is getting close to/over the limit of traction in at least the first 2 gears (or NSL) therefore changing the final drive surely would give big gains on mpg whilst not really affecting most cars during "spirited" driving?

I loved the fact that the Mk7 (pre ST200) was geared so high as to at least theoretically (if it didn't have the front aero profile of a concrete block) of a chase supercars! it allowed for one of the most economic drives when not pushing it whilst also giving the possibilities to expand the power without ever worrying you would hit the limit of the gearbox!!

@tcg keep the s3 theyre great cars haha

@MickyD nice one I dont drink but dont mind spending some pennys if it helps us out

@jase_llan ahh I see I dont do much motorway miles either but I do have spells of buying parts and the petrol kills me so the options always there if that makes sense when I first bought the st I was driving everywhere haha would just be nice to have that overdrive when I need it but not too much so if Im accelerating in 4th it wont fully die when I go into 5th it will still keep some sort of torque within its power band

Throttle control is all you need. As someone who has spent the money to secure a good return in power... Why would I then throw that away for mpgs or a faster top end?
Those that want lower motorway cruising speed generally haven't poured money into gaining power.
If it were me and I wanted a mk6 for daily motorway driving I'd get a 1.6tdci and a remap. Buckets more torque. Low cruising rpm, amazing mpgs, ÂŁ30 a year tax and a similar power output to a stock st150 with an st250 box.

For some reason on the thread posted above I can view it due to the administrator
You'd have to pay the (bargain) subscription fee to see threads in the other areas.

If you mean the gear swap thread the process was essentially swapping 5th with the box still in the car. Remove the battery and tray, remove n/s axle, gear cover off and remove 5th with a gear puller and swap it with the 5th out of a 1.4 Fiesta gearbox.

The cover on mine leaked after I had the diff done and it wasn't sealed properly, which was messy! So make sure its sealed well afterwards

If you think you're using too much fuel on the motorway, it can make a pretty big difference just dropping the speed to 65mph, easier said than done though!

@marvst Ive got a 200 spec myself but hate the short 5th gear thats all hence why I asked for a 6 speed haha
So you've not poured money into power mods, mearly spilt haha.
I'd imagine you'd lose a reasonable amount of power moving the 6 speed.
Only way you'll ever know is to do it.

@Marv_st Ive spent a decent amount but I know what youre saying its a drop in the ocean compared to fully forged with head work and a turbo/supercharger I wouldnt want to pour money at it just yet gotta get my other cars finished first
You've spent about the same as most other mk6 owners on here. Tell me about it. I just finished rebuilding my audi A3 1.8tfsi. 2k in parts later and she's done would dread to imagine the cost if I paid for labour. Then I have a mk1 TT to get rid of.

But we're getting off topic. I'd take @Driftingforlife's experience as you dodging a very expensive bullet.

Wasnt trying to say I spent more if thats how it came across if youre 200 spec youve spent near enough the same as the other guy with a 200 spec and nice mate Ive got a mk3 fiesta, Mk2 Xr2 and a series 2 rs turbo to do will be worth it in the end though
