EAC Failure - is this the correct fix?

Hi everyone,

First post so be gentle! ;-)

I just bought a 2005 05 plate Fiesta ST last Monday from a dealer up here in the north-east. Anyway the car was absolutely apot on for the first couple of days, loved it!! Then after a few days I got a shock when the car started "chugging" as if it was loosing power left right and centre, then the dash lights started to flash "Eac Failure" and the car felt like it had very much reduced performance.

I have contacted the dealer about this and he has been reading up and think's it is just the Thottle Body that needs cleaning. Question is, is that all that will be needed?

I must point out this is not a ford dealer - just a normal dealer selling all kinds of cars.

The car did get a Service and MOT before I bought it, but again that wasnt from a Ford dealer - so does that mean it wont have been pkugged into ford's funky computer which will straight away tell you anything that needs fixing/tweaking?

Im just a bit concerned that if we just get the Throttle Body cleaned it will happen again before long?

One thing I did find on this forum was the following:

"I had a fault on the dashboard saying EAC failure and my car was not running on all four cylinders, Strange!!!
Turned it off then on and it was fine, weird!!

They checked it and said they couldnt find anything wrong!!

Anyway...

What they did do is upgrade my ECU.
The mechanic said the timing comes out of the factory retarded, so the new setting sorts that out.
He also said it will rev more freely.
And it does, it is now spot on, thanks FORDS.
Anyone else had the same done on theirs???"

So does this mean I will also need an upgrade to my ECU as well as cleaning the throtle body? Can non-ford dealers do this?

Hope some of you can help!

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply mate - I will mention that to the dealer.

Just realised as well that this is posted in the wrong place, guess I should have looked for the technical section 1st!!

Quick update - this morning not only did I get the EAC Failure - but now the Engine Warning light is on and the car struggles to get over 30mph!

Booked it into Ford to get them to do the disgnostics so I can take the results back to the dealer I bought it from to make sure everything gets sorted!

How long should the disgnostics take? Ford have quoted me ÂŁ72/hour and, suprise suprise, it should take "just over an hour!" - that sound about right?

Sorry about your problems..

No warranty to speak of - but sounds like I have ~ 6 months to get any sort of mechanical failures sorted if I buy from a dealer....apaprently!!

Just got report back from Ford - they tell me it needs:

* Re-Calabration on ECU
* Faulty downstream hego sensor replacing

ÂŁ208 if I want them to do that - on top of the ÂŁ71.30 for their super quick diagnostics check!!

That price seems ok for the work doing on it but no way would i pay that much for diagnosis! A whole hour just to plug IDS into it and read off some fault codes!

The dealer by me has some robbing policy of no matter what fault you bring it in for the minimum they charge to investigate is ÂŁ50. Bunch of wa

So for example: "my headlight doesn't work"
Hartwell dunstable: "We replaced the bulb, that's ÂŁ80 please"

Thats why I bought a fault code reader for ÂŁ30 off eBay. Works a treat! Ok so there might still be something wrong with your car and it still needs to go in for whatever work but at least you dont have an initial outlay of ÂŁ80 or whatever just to have it plugged in.

look on ebay m8 and get an lambda sensor for ÂŁ15. better than paying ÂŁ120. ecu update is just an ignition update, you will only need this if your having trouble starting the engine? if not then it aint worth the money. especially if you have dreamscience or bluefin.

Thanks for all the advice!

It's in with the dealer at the min he's gonna book it in with ford up there and get it all sorted.

Whats the crack with these ÂŁ30 readers off ebay then? Any specifc ones I should look for? What do they do - just give me the same info as what ford can see when they plug it into their box of tricks?

I wouldnt mind some way to check myself now and then if anything doesnt feel right.

Sounds exactly like what is happening here too m8!

Dealer I bought it off has agreed to let ford dealer do the work (and pay for it!) - so they have ordered the replacement downstraem hego sensor in and also they will do the ecu update etc.

That part should be in by tomorrow, so hopefully by the weekend my little ST will be back to its former glory which I only managed to enjoy 3 or so days of before it went wrong lol!!

Also bought myself a PC Interface to connect to diagnostics port - it shows up the two same faults that the ford diagnostics brought back - so when I get it back I expect to plugin and see nothing.

Broom Broom!!

Sorted at last!!!

Bit of a treck getting there mind......

Booked into Arnold Clark to replace downstream hego sensor then update ECU. They decided to order the hego sensor on a one week delivery so they didnt have to pay for delivery. One week came, so did the part, but they forgot to book the car in, so told me it would be the next week they could do it. Nice!

Then they put the part on, flashed the ECU gave me the car back telling me it was "spot on" and "sorted" - 15mins from leaving garage, car starts to splutter and loose power, then on comes the EAC Failure light!!!!!!!

So booked back in, they realised they had missed something the first time - the Throttle Body needed replacing!! So they tried to pull a fast one and charge a small fortune - but dealer I bought from had a go at them and got it sorted cheaper (he paid) and this time made them order the part for next day delivery.

Just got it back - gave it a good run out and drives better than ever before!!! Im guessing all this was either already broke, or on its way out when I got it and it probably wasnt known about - but not to worry cos now its working like a dream.

Love it!
