So, some of you may know that I’m a huge fan of Mountune 😅 and I’ve always sworn by their products, hence why my 3 ST’s have pretty much everything Mountune on them.

I’ve being buying and using their products for around 15 years now and back in 2015 when my MK7 was a year old I decided to purchase the newly announced MR230 upgrade after having the MP215 on my car since new. Yes, it was expensive, but I’ve come to accept that you pay a premium for their products because of the quality and their years of knowledge working with Ford.

I was and still am extremely happy with the MR230 upgrade and never really felt the need to go any further (power wise) with my MK7 as I loved the way it’s always performed.

At the end of last year Mountune announced their M225/M235 package via the SMARTflash system and being that I’m part of this ecosystem with my two MK8 ST’s I was somewhat intrigued to see what this M235 High Torque map could potentially offer over the MR230 that I’ve had on my car for the last 9 years. Yes, it’s ONLY a 5 BHP increase in power on paper, but the increased torque is what I was really fussed about.

So, after a bit of thought over the last few months I decided to take the plunge this week with the Valentines Day Mountune discount code and purchase the maps, complete with another Mountune badge and a funky dongle to upload the new M235 file to the car.

It arrived on Friday and after a bit of messing about in the car with downloading the new app and sending my cars details back to Mountune via the app, the new files arrived about an hour later which meant I was able to upload and see what this had done for my car over the weekend.

Yesterday I took it out for a blast for a few hours and went through the gears doing various pulls in various gears (all within the speed limit of course) and although I felt a slight difference, I wasn’t massively impressed and was even slightly disappointed when I got back home. This package cost me £500 which yes is a lot of money for what it is especially when I already have the MR230 on my car but I did somewhat take the risk and wasn’t really sure what I was going to expect, but I was feeling quite underwhelmed by the time I got back home and parked the car up. 😏

Anyway, today I decided to take the car out for another spin for a few hours just to confirm my disappointment and bizarrely the car now feels massively different? I couldn’t believe the difference in the midrange and how much nicer and quicker the extra torque now makes the car go. I was wondering if it was the placebo effect, but it absolutely isn’t because the extra power is much more noticeable and I couldn’t get enough of it! 😁

So, just to conclude and if anyone was wanting/considering doing what I’ve done (madness I know because of the money I’ve spent) even if you’ve only got the MP215 package, do it, because it’s an awesome upgrade and now I couldn’t be happier with it even though I was already happy with MR230. 😊

My car with MR230 is due a cambelt this year due to being 10 years old so thought that with a view to the possibility of going M310 in the future and avoiding any further complication with cam belt timing I thought it would be worth getting the M235 Smart Flash.

Mountune have been great, sent me all maps I needed for MR230 Cam Timing M235 Map and Stock Cam Timing M235 map. I have been enjoying the M235 on MR230 Cam Timing!

It's definitely WAY more punchy now. I would almost say it's too punchy compared to the MR230 as that was more linear in delivery. Mountune did reduce the cost of the upgrade for me considering I had MP215 > MR230 and already paid for those maps. It does smart a bit but having the flexibility of further upgrades and being able to go back to stock cam timing is a boon to me!

Fitted the new carbon intake also and it's gone from OEM+ to ASBO.

Nice! 👌🏻

I agree, the car does feel very punchy now compared to the MR230 upgrade. I’ve been loving the M235 upgrade ever since installing it a couple of months back; dare I say it but it’s much more superior to the MR230 upgrade now having that extra noticeable torque.

I’m yet to purchase the carbon intake but your ASBO description has now got me justifying my bank balance once again! 😂

An excellent review.

I purchased the same upgrade during the 12 days of mountune promo - couldn't resist adding some extra torque, plus having the immobiliser option was for me a no-brainer.
Thank you matey for your kind words. ☺

I just thought I’d like to share my thoughts on here for anyone that was debating/wondering the same thing as me and I’m now delighted with purchase. 👍🏻

I've owned my ST since autumn. Has stage 2 VUDU intercooler, various large pipes (🤷🏻‍♂️) and mountune airbox but has a standard map. Was thinking of getting a map like the M225 as the car feels laggy and seems like it gets bogged down with the large cooler and standard map. Will do some research on this. Is traction a bit of an issue in a Mk7 with a map?

I have the M235HT tune on my Fiesta ST (upgraded from MR230) and I've been having problems with it. The cars MOT was 2 weeks after flashing the M235HT map. The car failed the MOT on emissions and not just a bit out, it was way out. The MOT inspector suspected the car to be running rich due to the map on the car, warning this would damage the CAT and Turbo. I reinstalled the MR230 map, did 80 miles worth of driving and made sure the the emissions readiness monitor statuses were completed using the TDN app. The car passed the emissions re-test 'clean as a whistled', which to me suggests there is no problem with the car. I have reinstalled the M235HT map with the view to getting the emissions rechecked after the car has all the emissions readiness monitor statuses completed. Unfortunately after 500 miles of driving the Oxygen Sensor readiness is still incomplete.

Do other M235HT owners have the Oxygen Sensor readiness status as incomplete?

What MPG are you achieving? (I'm getting around 40MPG on the M235HT map, I was able to achieve 47MPG on the MR230 map.)

I have had my cambelt done this week at MJ Performance who were brilliant and reverted back to stock cam timing and installed the stock cam timing M235 map now.

Not sure whether the car is relearning or settling but the stock cam timing M235 map feel totally different to the MR230 cam timing version.

I’m happy to be back to standard cam timing now to avoid any further complications but the car feels a bit flat now. Will take it out again today and see. Almost feels stock…

always felt the MR230 was revvy, the MR230 M235 a bit too punchy and not very smooth but now it’s a bit flat…

I have my gear change indicator back now though…

I’ve always had a developing fault code on my car since MR230. Something to do with efficiency on bank 1 sensor or something.

Mountune said this was normal…
Hi Logsi, Thank you for your replies. Interesting that you say that Mountune said that it was normal for MR230 to develop a fault code. My car was on MR230 for 5 years and never had fault code come up. That said the car been on M235HT for the past 4 months and recently had a P2279:95:28 Intake Air System Leak Bank 1, incorrect assembly fault code flag up. I had the car checked over but couldn't find any issues with it so the code was cleared. The car has been running fine, just worried about the potential rich fuelling damaging the CAT.

The car (M235HT) did go into the MOT cold but the emission figures were so far out there had to be a problem with the car or map. All previous MOT's I've had done the car (MR230) has been cold with no issues, but I do realise that the CAT works optimally when very hot. I took the car (MR230) in warm for the MOT emissions retest.

I've checked the battery on the car which is now 8 1/2 years old and its coming up as weak. So I will change this soon. I've read that a weak battery can cause sensor gremlins.

I have my gear change indicator back now though…
None of the Mountune maps I've had on my car have shown the gear change indicator. Might be worth checking which map has been installed.

My MP215 did but as soon as the MR230 was installed it ceased to show the gear up sign in the middle cluster.

It shows this again now.

The developing fault was just in the background and wouldn’t flag an EML but if you used the mTune handset or smart flash it shows it. It’s gone now since going back to stock cam timing and M235. Will keep an eye on whether it comes back.
