normal operating temperature

My car has always warmed up to 90 once its been on a while, (the needle sits in the middle of the little gauge)

I noticed my coolant was below the MIN line at the weekend so I topped it up with a little water to take it just past the MIN line (as I intend to get the system flushed next month as part of the service anyway.)

The gauge now sits at least 10 degrees lower, even on a long run.

Should this be expected?

But thats a good thing?

The coolant temp doesnt have to get to 90 or anything before its "good" - you want the coolant to be as cold as possible, the gauge is just there so you can see if its gets TOO HOT (which is why it doesnt start at zero, cos it doesnt matter when its below the lower scale of the gauge...)

Its the oil that has an operating temperature, since theres no gauge for that....
