Oil filter thread size

Hey there,

Any ideas on the thread size for the standard Ford oil filter? I'm buying bits to fit an oil cooler to my car, need to work out which Mocal sandwich plate to buy...would measure the thread but I dont have a spare filter at the moment.

I know Ford oil filters all used to be 3/4 UNF, but not certain and since its ~ÂŁ45 for the part I'd rather not buy the wrong one!

I'm guessing I'm not the first to have bought an oil cooler for the ST, so hoping someone will know!

I am making one at the moment for mine but 100% what you mean mate. You mean the bolt running through the oil cooler into the housing or the threads coming off the sandwich plate to the cooler?

I mean the thread size of the stock filter...I'm presuming the sandwich plate screws onto the engine on where the filter does, then the oil filter screws on below?

The size output/inlet feeds to the cooler from the sandwich plate I can deal with, size is less important here, you'd just buy appropriate hoses and fixings etc...can always get adapters anyway. Its the thread for the sandwich plate that matters...else you can't fix it to the engine.

But its the filter thread size that I need...

Cheers...now to work out the hoses! Complicated and expensive is not the word...

I have 1/2 male BSP on the cooler, and will have 1/2 female BSP on the inlets/outlets of the sandwich plate...all the hoses are -8 so I figure some adaptors are going to be needed here!

You clearly have a lot of faith in me! Misguided? We will see!

The coolers themselves are straightforward, a 13 row full width (235mm) cooler will be more than sufficient for even the supercharged cars, so long as they are located properly.

In terms of hoses if you want to use the posh blue/red anodised Goodrich/Aeroquip like I am planning to, I would recommend you get a cooler with -8 JIC sized inlet/outlets, if you get a cooler with 1/2 inch BSP fittings like me you'll find you need adaptors as the Goodrich fittings don't seem to come in those sizes! The mocal sandwich plates come with 1/2 BSP outlets so you will need adapters that end if you want to use Goodrich hose bits there.

If you are happier with push on or plain rubber hoses then 1/2 BSP fittings are readily available which will make things cheaper and easier.

This weekend I will look at cooler location, should not be too hard to find some good space behind the front grill.

well, do you know there is million types of rubber, and the one you need (HI TEMP/OIL RESISTANT) hose is not cheap at all...
so i would skip cheap ebay parts.Get radiator and sandwich plate from ebay, and get hoses yourself.
Btw i have turbo engine, and oil temp on my car never passed 99c....
i think you do not need oil cooler kit unless you are goin to race track.

Hi Will, I have just finished the design of mine.

The 1/2bsp one I have is now going to be a PAS cooler which will be located in front of the driver side wheel pointing towards the floor.

This means I am free to buy a new one and run braided hoses and mine now consists of:

One mocal sandwich plate with 3/4 extension bolt -- http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p3395/EXTENSION-BOLT-3/4UNF/product_info.html

Two 1/2bsp to 8AN male adaptors -- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150521212538&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Two 8AN hose ends -- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170615163923&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Three metres of braided nylon hose -- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150437588440&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Two billet hose seperators to keep them away from each other -- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150558068127&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Two 90 degree hose fittings to the cooler -- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150433631508&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

And if it fits (gonna measure tomorrow) one 13 row 405mm (because I can

Remember when I said I wanted a cheap setup, well that hasn't happened like everything else but at least I will have cool oil
