Ford had big problems with wheels corroding around the metal valve, Ford changed to rubber valves for this reason.

If you just have the valve changed, it will probably carry on leaking or will do after a while.

 

My car is similar age to your girlfriends and the metal TPMS valves are Ford part# 1936088 , there's loads for sale on eBay, But I guarantee it will be the wheel corroding around the existing metal valve which is the problem.

 

If you buy the valves yourself you'll also need (well, you're recommended) to buy a new washer as well. They're relatively cheap for Ford, about a quid each I think? I think they act as a sacrificial crush washer. ETIS will tell them you need a washer as well if you enquire. Be prepared for massive variation in fully fitted prices, I had quotes between £45 and £90 per wheel.

if you have a local garage who can do it best asking them. Not done it but I understand repairing TPMS sensors to the car is fairly easy.

However I had a slow leak on OSF recently, replaced with OEM Ford valve stem and new washer... And it's slow leaking again. Loses about 7 psi every couple of months. I bought these instead and now don't worry about it:

I bought a set of TPMS valve stems and all the fittings from TPMS Warehouse recently, good service from them - £85 for four Huf RDE031 stems and sensors - but I'm yet to buy the accompanying alloys... Or tyres... :laughing:

 

Thanks for the replies, I'm still confused as to what to get to fix the valve. If its corrosion of the wheel can it be just cleaned up? Is the rubber valves the answer. I've already got a gauge and she's losing more air that I'm comfortable with having to put in 5 psi per week.

 

To cut a long story short. I had "leaky" metal valves and it turned out to be minor corrosion on the alloy. I got the valves and alloy changed under warranty.

 

On my last 2014 ST the rims corroded around the metal valves, i had them refurbished and the valves changed to rubber ( kept the original sensors and swapped them over ), no problem after that. If your running metal valves you will find that they will eat the allow due to bi-metallic corrosion.

 

Thanks again for the info so if I get the wheel cleaned up around the valve (there's no viable damage or corrosion on the wheel so would like to avoid a refurbish if possible) and replace the valve with these ?

 

Hi, Yes that should work as long as they are compatible with your sensor design/keyway .

 

Just to close this off my father in law had already bought a Huf brand replacement sender and valve and this has been on the wheel for a couple of weeks now with no loss of air. Fingers crossed it's now fixed.

In six years and two STs I've had nothing but problems with the OEM Ford valves. So much so that the last time I needed a new valve and stem, the Ford dealership tried to fit a rubber stem. No chance...

I would get new TPMS sensors at the same time as valves, the batteries in the TPMS sensors don't last forever. Refitting an old sensor only means you will have to have the tyre off sooner than otherwise needed to fit a new TPMS sensor (and valve).

Huf TPMS stems and sensors are a LOT cheaper than the Ford OEM ones, better designed and (so far) have not leaked on me.
