Hi

I'm looking to buy a mk8 and wanted to know if there are any common issues with them that I should look out for?

I've reserved a ST3 in silverfox on a 68 plate from Ford,

Only thing I have heard of was a possible oil leak on early cars. If the car you are buying was affected it should have been fixed.
Cheers it comes with a 2 year used ford warranty but I didn't want to pick a car that has issues. I'm coming from a Mk3 focus ST3 which I owned for 4.5 years. The fiesta is in silver fox I noticed in the pics the bumper looks a slightly darker shade. Has anyone else noticed any issues with the silver fox colour?

My memory isn't perfect but common complaints faults that come to mind:

Mechanically: Engine oil leaks, hesitancy in 1st/2nd on initial application of throttle

NHV: some have reported squeaks/noises from drivers side pillar and dashboard

Aesthetic: A few owners have reported sagging seat material or loose fabric from the first week of ownership, check paint is intact on the whole length of join between rear bumper and rear quarter these have had a few reports of missing/chipped paint in this area, Mismatched paint (down to personal pref), both seats should look the same, also check headlights ensure no delimitation/staining of the inner film again it should be a relatively easy warranty job if it's gone but better for them to do it before you agree than you have to chase up afterwards.

All these things are easy to spot either on pre-use or with a quick test drive

And this is all I can think of off the top of my head from the last few years, but I am getting old and my memory isn't as good as it use to be 20 years ago....

Oh and welcome BTW

Thanks Micky, my missis has the mk7 ST3 the only issue she's had was one of the illuminated scuff plates failing in its first year so very reliable. My mk3 focus not so much, had the dreaded ringland failure on piston 1 a couple of years ago. I'll check for all the things you mentioned when I go to view the car, yeah I just seen that the paint mismatch is a pretty common issue so hopefully it's not as bad in the flesh.

@Firestorm07 Most common in SF IIRC but it's down to personal preference/sight! Some of the owners photos where they are complaining I have looked at and though it's not that bad, sometimes even that there isn't a difference it's just down to the angular change in the panel without the smooth blend in due to panel join breaking the visual cues.... As I say it is always personal judgement.....

I'll see later today when I check the car out, didn't want another white or black car and the blue is very common. Hopefully it's not to bad.

As MickyD said really I had an oil leak and ford replaced my engine see the technical section for my thread on that, the seat material sags again ford replaced my seat. Check the alloys are not kerbed as mine corroded again manufacturer's defect from the factory.

Paint issues on the silver fox think other colours are fine. Apart from fords paint being very thin.

Boot struts are poor and don't open the boot up all the way have yo push them alot of people have just fitted better gas struts.

Apart from that the car is fairly robust.

Cheers, looked the car yesterday looked very clean. One of the alloys was curbed so dealer is replacing it. The paint only looks mismatched from certain angles so it's not to bad. When I mentioned the paint mismatch to the sales man he pointed out a orange mustang with the same issue and it seems to be common on exclusive colours. I'll keep an eye out for any oil leaks, what's the most common place to check?

As mentioned earlier colour is a strange thing, there is probably no mismatch you just perceive there is. if the bumpers to bodywork where contiguous with no visible join in them you would probably not be able to see any colour change, but even a couple of mm along with the natural direction change makes it seem to the eye to be a different colour.

If you don't believe me have a look at this optical illusion that kinda shows what I mean...

Even though the blocks are the same colour your brain is telling you the top block is darker only when you remove visual stimulus by covering the centre 10mm of screen do you see that they are the same... The brain is an amazing thing capable of even turning the upside down image we actually see though our eyes and converting it to the right way round in our brain, as well as maintaining a white balance better that the best cameras available all without us even thinking about it..... but it is fallible.....

The only issue with mine, which is a '19 plate car is the door edge protectors particularly the passenger side one which doesn't always retract properly, seems to be a cooler/cold weather issue.

I did also have the infotainment screen freeze a couple of times, but it cleared after being stwiched off and on again.

One other thing that no one seems to have mentioned is the tyres, the 18" Michelin Pilot Super Sports which are sadly no longer produced by Michelin for one reason or another?

Lol your probably right, I've got a mk3 St in frozen white and after giving it a clean I can now see a colour difference between the bumpers and main bodywork. I've only owned the car 4 1/2 years but now I'm seeing it everywhere. I think I've programmed my brain to see a difference.

You have chosen the best colour :nice: . I can only see the difference in the paint in photos, i hardly notice it when looking at the car, but when you are driving it you cannot see it anyway. You will love the Mk8.

Yes love the colour, looking forward to picking it up next week. Already toying of the idea of getting the Mountune M235 upgrade. My focus is pushing 300bhp so the fiesta is a bit slower. The dealer let me go on the test drive on my own for 30 minutes so gave it a good workout

Definitely recommend a remap upgrade, all the ones available transform the car. Has the one you are getting got the performance pack (diff)?

My oil leak from memory you could see coming from the left hand side if your looking at it between the two heads. I'm running m235 and it really transforms the car I also had a mk3 focus st running mountune 275 which was a great but i think point to point the fiesta is quicker having the lsd makes the difference as you can just pin the throttle mid corner and it just pulls you round, you couldn't do that in the focus as it just spun the wheels and washed wide.

My mk3 is running the Collins cp2v2 map and it's very good, car wheels spins in 2nd and 3rd but I always found it was quite grippy if you weren't to heavy on the accelerator. Sorry to see it go but looking forward to the fiesta.

We had a new steering column, because of sounds when turning steering wheel, 3 dors seat fabrics are getting small holes where the top and buttom parts mets - near the hinge on outer side - i am struggling to get it fixed, and again thn paint on whole car race red and thin coolant ribs on the IC and AC Cooler getting bent by insects - 55000 km. Engine with perfect fuel economy - 17,5 km/l - 49 mpg - Love the car.
